Coastal Waters Forecast for Victoria

Issued at 4:50 pm EST on Thursday 29 July 2010for the period until midnight EST Sunday 1 August 2010.

Weather Situation

A series of cold fronts will affect the State during the forecast period. The most active front will reach the far west of Victoria during Saturday night and extend throughout the remainder of the State during Sunday as an associated low pressure system develops near Tasmania. On Monday the low pressure system will move over the Tasman Sea as a high pressure system develops over the Bight.

West Coast: SA-VIC Border to Cape Otway

Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Point Lonsdale.

Forecast for Thursday until midnight

Winds: Northerly 15 to 25 knots. Seas: 1 to 2 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 2 metres.

Forecast for Friday

Winds: North to northwesterly 20 to 25 knots becoming northwesterly 20 to 30 knots during the morning. Seas: 2 metres increasing to 3 metres around midday. Swell: Southwesterly 2 metres. The chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Forecast for Saturday

Winds: Westerly 25 to 30 knots tending west to northwesterly 30 to 40 knots around midday. Seas: 2 to 3 metres increasing to 3 to 4 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southwesterly 2 to 3 metres increasing to 3 to 4 metres late in the evening.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: West to northwesterly 30 to 40 knots tending west to southwesterly 25 to 35 knots during the morning then becoming southwesterly 30 to 40 knots during the evening. Seas: 3 to 4 metres increasing to 5 metres during the evening. Swell: Southwesterly 2 to 4 metres increasing to 4 to 5 metres from midday. The chance of thunderstorms with hail until late afternoon.

Central Coast: Cape Otway to Wilsons Promontory

Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Point Lonsdale.

Forecast for Thursday until midnight

Winds: North to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots tending northerly 15 to 25 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1 to 2 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 1 to 2 metres. Swell: Easterly 0.5 metres.

Forecast for Friday

Winds: North to northwesterly 15 to 25 knots increasing to 20 to 30 knots by early evening. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres increasing to 2 to 3 metres later in the evening. Swell: Southwesterly 1 to 2 metres. Swell: Easterly about 1 metre. The chance of thunderstorms in the early evening.

Forecast for Saturday

Winds: West to northwesterly 25 to 30 knots increasing to 25 to 35 knots during the afternoon then becoming northwesterly 30 to 40 knots by early evening. Seas: 2 to 3 metres increasing to 3 to 4 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southwesterly 1 to 2 metres tending westerly 2 to 3 metres late in the evening. Swell: Easterly 0.5 metres until late afternoon.

Winds: West to northwesterly 30 to 40 knots tending westerly 20 to 30 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Up to 4 metres decreasing to 3 metres during the evening. Swell: Westerly 2 to 3 metres increasing to 4 metres from midday. The chance of thunderstorms with hail until late afternoon.

Central Gippsland Coast: Wilsons Promontory to Lakes Entrance

Forecast for Thursday until midnight

Winds: Southeast to southwesterly 5 to 15 knots tending northwesterly later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Easterly 0.5 to 1.5 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Friday

Winds: North to northwesterly 10 to 20 knots reaching 25 knots at times in the morning. Winds 15 to 25 knots by early evening. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres increasing to 2 metres around dawn. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Saturday

Winds: West to northwesterly 20 to 30 knots increasing to 25 to 35 knots by early evening. Seas: Up to 3 metres increasing to 4 metres by early evening. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 2 metres. Swell: Easterly about 1 metre until late afternoon.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: Northwesterly 20 to 30 knots, reaching 35 knots at times, tending west to northwesterly 20 to 30 knots during the morning. Seas: Up to 4 metres decreasing to 3 metres during the morning. Swell: Westerly 1.5 to 3 metres. The chance of thunderstorms with hail from the morning until late afternoon.

East Gippsland Coast: Lakes Entrance to 60nm east of Gabo Island

Forecast for Thursday until midnight

Winds: Northeasterly 10 to 20 knots tending northwest to southwesterly later in the evening. Seas: Up to 2 metres. Swell: Easterly 2 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Friday

Winds: Northwesterly 10 to 20 knots. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres. Swell: Easterly about 2 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Saturday

Winds: West to northwesterly 20 to 30 knots tending westerly 30 to 35 knots during the afternoon then decreasing to 25 to 30 knots later in the evening. Seas: 1 to 2 metres increasing up to 3 metres around dawn then increasing to 4 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 1.5 metres. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres decreasing to 0.5 metres in the late afternoon.

Winds: Northwesterly 20 to 30 knots tending west to northwesterly 15 to 25 knots during the morning then tending westerly 20 to 30 knots during the evening. Seas: Up to 3 metres decreasing to 2 metres during the morning then increasing to 2 to 3 metres during the evening. Swell: Westerly about 2 metres. The chance of thunderstorms with hail from midday.
