Since we re calling a 6'8 greedy beaver a shortboard, I have liked the look of a 6'10-7 oh one these for a while: www.realwatersports.com/collections/christenson-nautilus
anyone ridden one?
Gee. That looks good. Thats the kind of stretched fish shape i had been looking for
Yep, I have one. 6'10, quad. I posted about it somewhere on here, maybe the mid length thread? but that review pretty much nails it. They surf like a fish but just stretched out with more volume.
Grovels well in average surf and is even better when the waves get better.
Great all round board.
Turns on a dime when you want it to, plenty of easy speed, paddles good. Would recommend.
Thanks SP, is it a daily driver or do you save it for certain conditions or waves?
Rode this zinger this morning. Fastest quad fish I've ridden and turns easily at full speed (and I've ridden a lot...proper fish not pseudo shortboard fishes). Took a bit of dialling in with fins. Stretch quads in large and hit the nail on the head.
You should've been in church, watch out for lightening..... l might be up your way next week, trade you a ride on Lizzy for a couple on your Thai zinger

Damn, somehow I missed that...
How does it compare to your C-bucket?

Yep, it become the put in the car board, covers a range of conditions but definitely goes better in good waves but then don't most boards.
This clip shows the rails rocker and thickness distribution which is a bit different to most.

Similar but different, probably turns better in smaller waves. Shorter turning radius, quad gets going easier of the mark. Still paddles good, probably better in Shifty onshore sectiony beachies then the c bucket. Still ride the c bucket lots but the nautilus probably has a better range.
5'8 NPJ Bean/Duo. I've been on a twinny kick so I've neglected it of late. Swapped the usual Duo set up for the quad set up as the waves were a bit burgery. Can't remember the last time I rode a quad. It's definitely going back into the rotation.
Well ive done sup surf, Mals, 10 fters. all kind of mid lengths . Etc. Fun yes
But none of those come close to the dynamics shortboards in waves that suit. All of surfings skills including trim and flow are all needed in bucket fulls to be good at it.. if you dont understand that you dont understand surfing.
Im hoping to be doing it for another decade and will mostly be surfing shortboards even if waves dont suit to keep my skills going. That and paddle board dw ing which i hope keeps me fit enough
So i guess im basically out of here. No use pissing crew off about it
Cheers crew
Ps mac will be happy
Are you OK LACEY what's with that bazaar post did someone have a go at you that set you off I must be missing something

Hey mate, 5'8 x 20 3/8 x 2 5/8.
Cheers
you use the twin fins like on his page?
nealpurchasedesigns.com/duo/
Looks so fun in the vid too
arrgghhh too many boards to try - not enough time or funds haha
Ry Von down in Vasse just did a co-lab with npj, so crew could get their mitts on one of his shapes last month but I wasn't really on page for it
this vid kind of makes me think harder!!!
Yeah mate those are the ones. The Duos are really fun boards, I have the 5'8 and a 7'2 mid. They're not like anything else I've ridden BUT still with a familiar feel. Neal uses the term "snakey" to describe the ride and its spot on. They're just so smooth you just want to keep moving, going rail to rail and carving. They also turn super tight in the pocket and go vert no problem. You can pump them down the line but not like a thruster, you need to keep things smooth. They're probably not for everyone but if you dig singles and twins and can adjust your surfing accordingly then they're a blast. They definitely have the nod over singles in smaller waves too, much faster out of the gate.
Yeah I saw he did a few out West. Pretty sure Von Boards has some stock left too.
I really like Neal's boards (I have 4). They're just so user friendly. Coming from performance shortboards I love the extra paddle power, early entry and speed from the flatter rockers and extra volume but those don't seem to get in the way of performance. You can really surf them aggressively, especially the quartets etc.
In the early 80's, a friend of a friend turned up at our little reef break in Perth with an old two fin model. Definitely not a twinny in the conventional sense. Two double foiled fins , set well back on a fairly conventional 70's planshape. I had one surf on it and loved it. Hot Dot Surfboards maybe? Never seen one since until these NPJ jr models. Had been considering putting two extra boxes in an area pin single fin that a Tony Hardy shaped me 15 years ago, that i had been struggling to find the right fin for....

Has anyone seen one of the previous incarnations or ridden one? Curious about the history / development. Pretty sure the board I rode came from the East Coast,Oz. Not sure about brand, maybe Hot Dot, but me and my friends and I found so many boards in the tip, that I really can't recall the manufacturers.
I think it'd be pretty hard to pinpoint.
Earliest photo of one that I've seen.
Straight on it Toobz, was that a google search or out of your archives? Do you know of any of the background?.?
All the fins appear to be in fin boxes , I guess that my help refine the age of the photo.
Good work!

Hey SRrat,
No I remembered seeing the photo on another forum. I recently saw it on Instagram I think and it did have a bit of info about who, where and when.
As far as the Duo set up I hear it was used on windsurfers and also surfboard shapers such as Bill Thrailkill and Nigel Beckham who still shapes up on the Goldy did their own take on the design.

Yeh I have seen them on sailboards. This shot and the board I rode were well before that. Any one remember when Skeg boxes started appearing? Thanks for info , will check out the Goldy connection.

Kinda looks late transition period?

Guy who posted the photo said pic is early 70's.
I'll try and find the Insta post later if I get a chance but I don't like my chances as I follow way too many accounts.
Pretty sure Greg Griffin on surfer mag design forum has posted the above pic a few times over the years.
