Hello VIC wave kiters,
Looking for a wave hookup in VIC, preferably SE around the peninsula or maybe even Phillip Island?
I live and normally kite bayside (mentone, mordialloc etc.) but am getting a bit bored of just mowing the lawn on my surfboard out in the bay and want to get into some real waves.
I've got a bit of experience wave kiting in WA and also spent a couple of weeks in Mauritius this year, but definitely not an expert. Not that familiar with the spots and conditions around VIC and also probably not quite confident enough to hit some of the open beaches on my own. Would be awesome if I could tag along with someone?
Also, I work on the peninsula and finish at 4 most days so can get down to Pt Leo, Rye etc around 4.30 most days to make the sea breezes.
Let me know if I can tag along with you!
Cheers,
Dave
Is point Leo good?
Do you know how dangerous Mauritius is by the way? Much more dangerous than any Aussie beach. I had no idea until i spoke with a few people, was just there myself. A few to half a dozen people die each year kiting. The super strong current/ rip and the wind take you KM's offshore and people are never seen again. As long as it on-shore and not crazy big its not particularly dangerous.
Didn't think Mauritius was too bad when I was there? There were two breaks we kited Manawa and One Eye, can see how One Eye could get sketchy when it's big (offshore wind etc.), but didn't go out there on the huge days. Manawa gets big but it's pretty mellow and wind/swell direction doesn't take you off shore. Have heard the stories about people being swept away at One Eye, but there is normally heaps of people out there and rescue boats, which makes it seem ok (saw quite a few rescues), also, always went out with others, don't think I would be game to head out there on my own. Feel like it's always better to be out with a few others when you're playing in the waves.
Not sure about Pt Leo, never tried to kite it before, hence my first post.
Where's the spot to kite at Pt Leo? crunchie point side or 2nd reef? Have been out at 2nd reef on the SUP and thought it was a pretty good wave. Would Southerly be too onshore there though?

I was out there on Tues straight onshore, southerly was good, obviously not the ideal wind dirction for true wave riding, but was a lot of fun
Finally got out and had a go at Gunnamatta yesterday in the arvo SE that was blowing, got a few nice waves, awesome fun! Will def be back!
