Hi Guys,

I am total Newbie to surfing, Very interested in Kite Surfing, I know swimming and that's about it, got a few lessons surfing in Bali, I am interested in kite surfing as I see all these amazing kitsurfers surfing on Altona beach.

I live very close to Altona Beach and am interested in learning Kitesurfing,

Can anyone guide me or point me to more resources. Anyone doing private lessons here ?

Is it necessary to know normal surfing beforehand ?

How did you guys learn to Kite surf ?

I believe kitesurfing is easier and can be done more often than wind surfing because a lesser windspeed is required, is that right ?

Wondering how expensive is this to get into as a hobby ?

I have looked online and called Altona KSS and that's about it, they quoted me $419 for a 5 hour lesson(2 hours 1 day + 3 Hours another day). Is that reasonable ?

Look forward to your replies. Are there others around here doing this ?

Thanks in advance

You can find some groupon coupons for a bit of a discount on your intro lessons. But do take lessons! And go 1-on-1. Granted it's more expensive but you should get going a lot faster. $500 is nothing compared to life disability. Or hospital bills. Yes, people do get injured badly and people do die kiteboarding/surfing. And watch as many YouTube videos on how to get out of ****ty situations.

How expensive is it? Talking new(ish): a harness $300, summer and winter wettie $500-800 (for both), bar and lines $600, at least 2 kites (cca 9m and 12m) around $2000 each, a good board $800+. Oh, and an obligatory GoPro camera Hero4 Black $740... Petrol depending on where you go.
And don't forget about your ongoing negotiation techniques courses and marriage counselling...

Less than $1000 will get you a good second-hand, kite, bar&lines and harness, just make sure you buy a recent years models (at least 2010 or later). Seen plenty of good packages go on ebay for $800 mark (2012 kits worth $3k originally). Go to a shop you pay double this.

If you have to spend $740 on a gopro then you have a vanity problem

Oh, I forgot the full face helmet to attach your camera to for those 15 minute POV videos, booties and gloves and a flotation device.

True. 2nd hand gear is cheaper.
