Hi guys,

Just a shout out to the green North kite at Elwood on Australia day…….

Had a mate at work tell me that this kite nearly took out his kids on a busy day at the beach.

Not sure if he’s explaining it correctly, but the kiter was launching amongst a lot of people and was coming in at speed close to swimmers etc.

Be careful out there guys on busy days – no one is perfect of course, and the wind can do funky things to even the experienced person, but if you can avoid launching near families and large groups of people, it might stop people complaining and putting unwanted pressure on our awesome hobby.

Also remember the boating laws, its 5 knots within 200m of the beach…. So you can’t go speeding in and doing turns at speed near people (especially kids – don’t overestimate a zealous Gen X parent) etc…..

If we help educate each other, hopefully we protect our hobby sport a little.

Cheers,

You can kite at 5 knots in the non-swim zone to get out into the "free" zone.

You also have to be at 5 knots near any swimmer, doesn't matter where they are.

Elwood have a lot of clubby swimmers.

Elwood is simply a silly place to kite. It doesn't have flat water like StKilda or a reef like Brighton. It does have lots of families and clubbies. Please don't kite at Elwood.

I remember seeing this guy. He was on a surfboard. There wasn't much wind so he was walking upwind then kiting down the beach, doing lots of kite loops to keep the kite up. He did this about 4 times in the time I was at the beach. He definitely wasn't going faster than 5 knots and was not more than 100 meters out.

So does Mentone doesn't mean we don't kite there, most of us just stay well clear of designated swimming area. Would you go and say the same to all the regular windsurfers at Elwood?

On another note, I understand the Elwood sailing club is right in front of a no-boating zone. Hows the irony (or stupidity) of that!?

Windsurfers are much less of a risk for the public than kiters - in terms of perceptions and consequences. At Elwood the windsurfers tend to stay a ways offshore. Doing coast runs I've seen kiters dredging back and forth way too close in - that's the primary issue here.

Glad sharing works at your local.

I cycle to work everyday ... so that means apparently all the other cyclists on the road are my mates and apparently I need to pull them up on their behavior.
