Looking for advice from someone in the competent unhooking space who used some sort of video based program to develop their skills from the basics to wherever they are now.

My 10 yr old son has pretty much mastered the Raley and S bend, and the occasional surface pass (needs a little more work). Now comes the hard part with exponentially increasing risk.

Does there exist a video based skills progression that will sequentially develop the unhooked skills to at least the medium stage (say a double S bend to blind for instance).

Meaning it develops SEQUENTIALLY the skills needed to mitigate as much as possible the increasing risk associated with the more technical moves, starting from basics. I'd rather him get all the basics right first.

You may offer the usual suspects, that's fine, I just want to know some personal experiences on a video / web based program of development.

Much appreciated in advance because some of the beatings he is getting now is increasing my probability of a anxiety based heart attack!!!

Hey eppo
Although a bit old now, the progression videos "advanced" and "professional" are still pretty valid.
There is also plenty on line, I know Tom Court did a good series

Don't want to worry you more, but it wouldn't hurt to talk to a Dr or Phisio in regards to when's best for his shoulders to start copping hits like that. There is alot of talk about future health impacts with young athletes.

It's a triple s instructional with heaps of tips and interviews, even from the guy that invented the s bend....

Had a look on u tube but couldn't find it....just called Real triple s instructional, about 50mins long....

even find some of Shannon's old wake park videos are pretty awesome....

I was wondering if you would post actually. How's things man, your boys still kiting ?

Yeh problem with the online stuff it's bit all over the place. I kind of want an advancing sequential set of videos. A well thought out course that builds essentials skills up before each advancement.

Yeh those progression vids have always been good (and my first point of call) just wondering if there was anything else.

Cheers.

Hey eppo
yeah my kids have retired from kiting now, but they are enjoying competition surfing with groms their own age, and are enjoying that heeps.
Ive not seen much else, either, but if I may offer a small piece of advice and your son is good at raileys and s bends. The next thing to learn would be riding blind hooked in, once he has the feeling for riding blind then try land blind unhooked, so from a railey to blind, then railey to blind with an air pass (blind judge) then 313, back 313, s bend to blind, then s to blind with air pass, then s to back 3. That should keep him busy the rest of the summer. Only real danger with this is catching the heal side edge, he just has to pull the bar hard into the small of his back to get the board facing downwind enough so as not to catch the edge.

Mate that's a great sequence of slowly advancing moves. Cheers mate will follow those steps as they seem to make sense.

He can already ride blind hooked in but I will get him to nail that skill to a good level.

When he does a simple Raley to blind unhooked... i presume he only lands to blind then let's the force of the kite pull him back around. Otherwise it's gonna drag him off his blind edge surely once the slack is gone in the lines. ???

Sorry for the ignorance. Never liked this style, never wanted to learn it but the young punk is keen.

Not sure why he doesn't want to point his toes with the board off ????

if you are ever down our way and want to show him some stuff be much appreciated.

... shame ya kids aren't kiting and yeh I nearly lost him to!! has no one his age to kite with!! . Infact one of his best friends who he bashes around with is the under 11 national surfing champion at the moment. Luckily for me he hates boardriders and would rather just surf for fun.

there are few teenagers down here going hard so that kind of makes it a little easier. But he's already better than all of them.

Wish we lived near the pond. ??

Biggest thing about shoulder safety is strengthening the right muscles, I should know as iv had 2 shoulder recos and in the health industry now. The biggest red flag is a winging scapula, if your scapula is unstable you will essentially have unstable shoulders.
So muscles to strengthen are your serratuas anterior, infraspinatus, supscapularis and rear dealt.

Technique is Important. The one golden rule, and it's a rule i didn't appreciate enough (unfortunately iv had to pay the price with 2 busted shoulders) is, pull that bloody bar as hard as you can into your hip, not into your chest, not up to your shoulders but DOWN into your hip!

This is all you need to know, the rest you can just watch on YouTube, Ewan has a cool how to, so dose dan Sweeney.

Good luck

Lol. I see your point. In my defence. I'm married to a phisio, and have several close friends that have been pro riders since they were 12ish (hatteras days)that are pretty against passes at a young age. I'm no expert though. Thats why i recommend talki g to one.

Yeh was only joking. Appreciate all the input.

Pulling the bar down hard into your hip, just read that one to the boy.

Cheers for the info peoples...

I liked/like the progression teaching DVD/videos www.progression.me... I insisted my kid did nippers and wear impact vest and helmet.. but by the time he was 13 sponsored and indestructible he just followed SunSmart. He mostly learned from online clips. His Xmas present each year from an aunt was subscription to www.kiteworldmag.com/ This had/has 1 or 2 tricks with a comprehensive breakdown on technique each issue.. the video clips are probably online free but def' in their library..
Your job is/will be cameraman

Sam Light is having a training camp for kids or could be teenagers not sure. I read somewhere that it's this summer in Perth (January).

It sounds like he is doing great.

Re the comment above after landing blind (unhooked, following the raley) he just passes the bar behind his back, so he is now riding toeside. He then spins back to heel to hook back in, or just does it directly from toeside. The important thing is not edging against the kite while trying to hook in ie head a bit downwind after landing the trick to take all of the load of the lines.

Yeh that makes sense. Got the professional progression series on his iPad/ iPhone stream thingy.

Im actually going through it myself because I want to be able to tell the difference between the moves these guys do. I've never really been able to tell one Move from another to be honest. The overall basics but never the slight variations.

Its actually quite fascinating seeing all these advanced tricks broken down. Worth the exercise even if you have no intention of doing them.

Hey Eppo. I'd recommend a helmet if not already wearing one. Hit my head more times and harder catching edges than I ever did racing motocross. Other than that I used the progression stuff as well but have just about given the wake style away. Hard to keep away from the big air stuff up here
