So have been sucked into a local 80 kms bike ride..
I will be pushing the SAG / SAD wagon bumper bar off my back wheel..
Average of 25Kms/hr (wind assist !! please) with the hills involved
But sitting for hours in the saddle just is not my thing..

So here is the cross-training thought..
I want to see if I can do the 80 on my foil....

I am not game to do it at sea yet
(skill set is not there - the first session in the sea a couple of weekends ago - what a hoot but was launching out the back end of waves and unintentionally jump/splatting - the ratio of arriving back on the water on the board to off the board needs improving!!)

Here is a local lake with a 20 km lap..
Word of wisdom and optimism please....

Wind permitting will be giving it a crack...( probably not enough hours in the day to even do 1 lap at current skill level-)

Cheers

The only way to train for an 80km bike ride is ..... to ride a bike, lots.

25kph is super optimistic. An average of 17-18kph is more likely.

The one thing you need to train is your bum, or more specifically your perineum. You need to get in the hours on the bike to harden up your clacker. If you can't sit comfortably then you can't ride. If you can sit comfortably you can ride forever.

The big tip is to not ride fast. You'll wear yourself out and not enjoy it at all. If you cruise you'll go past all the others as they lie gasping beside the road.

As above. Foiling will do nothing for your bike riding! Zero, Zip, Nada.....

Get out there and ride your bike. 2-3 times a week for several hours at a time.

You need to get some aerobic fitness. (no kiting does not give you aerobic fitness anywhere near close to what you need on a bike)
You need to get your piss weak legs strong. (No kiting does not strengthen your legs anywhere close to cycling fitness)
You need to harden that arse up. The only way to do that is time on the bike.

If you are road cycling in a bunch you might be able to average 25kph. But otherwise 17-18 would be closer to the truth for a newbie onroad.
If you are mountain biking then drop that to 10-12knph.

Oh, I've been riding bikes for 20+ years, So I know a thing or two.

thanks Gorgo..If I fell off the bike at all compared to foil would be RIP.. brief disclosure.. decided to update 16 gears to 20 after getting rooted peddling up Mt Cootha 4 G8 Bris bike ride in autumn.. last owner left cleats on so graduation ceremony in rush hour at traffic lights when I stopped 4 first time.. fell over sidewards.. dooh clipped in shoes.. No horn toots of applause from fairly extensive audience..
Did 30 klicks on treddly this morning B4 office.. naaah the post is looking for an excuse to go foiling..
I always feel like I have had a decent all body work out after 60-90 minutes down winder in waves..
Been impressed with all the post of foiling tracking path they clock up alot of KMs.. and speed..
I need time on foil to improve.. weather and free time combination locally has been naaaf.
So set the challenge first 20 km ride will be a real buzz..the good to go foilers probably do that with out being aware= gold.
Water is cool enough in the lake to sink a couple of IPA's to celebrate on the finish line..
Cheers

will post first track but re the IPA's if I have a decent crack and fall short they will still be empty after pack down
BTW local peletons a fair few -isses past me 33+kph fun tagging for 5kms sucked along have a chat and listen to Clicking of idling cogs .. much harder DIY
I look forward to foiling being easy on the body.. Pilates style... if not that physical

Aquaplow... I used to windsurf years ago on lake boreen (on Holidays). Is it deep enough to Kite Foil? I would love to Holiday there and now I could kite in light winds and foil... Knowing the place where is the best place to camp and kite coming from Melbourne.

When I went there was no wind, I paddled across from the camp site straight South to the other side, dipping my paddle the whole way to check. It's deep enough all the way apart from the first 150m from shore say. Depending on your skills starting might be a bit hairy with a full length mast in lighter winds.

AP I'm generally done foiling at about the 30km Mark. I reckon 80Ks would take all day at my speed and be a total killer.

Hi.
a couple of posts to x-check

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/South-East-Queensland/Deep-enough-to-foil-boreen-point-or-Elanda-

the windsurfers are g8 bunch .. there was a big post on lake around Xmas on their forum..

watch for a couple of days.. it's gusty but might be bit exaggerated as heard weather station is on hatch club still = behind trees!!
holfuy.com/en/weather/894
there is a sister station seaward side of lake weyba useful if u go there.

I always drift launch as W/E / holidays sailing club takes out beach at Boreen point..

Friday social having a chat apparently the new owners of elanda point campsite have done a major refurb.. and started a microbrewery on-site... hmmm should re visit.. but in traditional SE it will be a PITA to walk upwind deep enough to foil. 6-700meters!!! Plus was gravely and Shelly..
KBGhost covered public site.. Way easier after permanents abandon when it flooded.. pretty site.. but Elanda was special when we stayed..

The lake depth...
I was running through the clay sludge about 4-500 meters out from SSE shore this arvo.. and it was no more than chest deep at best most all the way to boreen point. I run a 600 mast and every time I am skimming surface and slightly keeled over the foil wing tip was snagging so net depth would be around 850-900..
if you have good height control.. a non-issue..

A picture is worth 1000 words.. when get to PC will post zone. but in words... about 40% of lake..= The best area .. has sea grass on bottom and is around 2000+ depth.. mostly close to original river channel.. from Entrance to Everglades/Harry's hut end = north..2-300 meters out along sea side till probably 1 km past Teewah draw a square .. 40% of lake.
easy in SE to get to..

there's a SE Qld site guide QLD forum scroll down.. depends what you are looking for.. InSkip has camping and g8 potential.. Harvey Bay & Elliot heads too...
cheers

cross training.. today.. nada zip but good for starting line.. did a lot of that...
re..lap training and pace.. well not enough hours in the day after paying penance on the bike..(that finished before 10:00 am including coffee break)..

I clocked over 30kph 2-4pm (9M Cloud - it gets over powered at my weight - did not want to sacrifice downwind)..
Moral of the story - do not forget to pack foil - Nugget would be limiting in lighter winds..
Due East from Boreen Pnt 100 metres out 1200mm+ deep and 3-500m out 1600-1800mm...
The sailing club runs serious kids reggattas in deeper zone..
Also-- if you have 4WD go to beach side there is a g8 almost empty 40 kms down-winder going north to Double Island point.

Get yourself one of these:

www.greenbikekit.com/bafang-8fun-bbs-kits-and-spare-parts/48v-bbs02b-bbshd-kits.html

Then spend your time on your foil board instead of riding a bike. Easy

Yeahh I was overtaken by another geriatric last week, he was on a Mary Poppins e-bike pretending to peddle and doing 30+kph.. He would have really added insult to injury If he had been holding an umbrella.. Butt (hmm) I would assume he would still be hardening the arse up.
